Our Story
A breif historical account of Providence Girls’ Cathtolic School
Background
Founded by the Sisters of St Joseph of Cluny in 1860 as an elementary school on the ground floor of Archbishop’s House and later part of St Joseph’s Convent, Port-of-Spain. In 1866 the school was transferred to the northeastern corner of St Joseph’s Convent due to a lack of space and then to ‘Providence Building’ where it would be known as Providence Intermediate School and its student population ranged from ages 6 to 18 years. As St Joseph’s Convent expanded, Providence was forced in 1937, to seek a new location, which was found at 146 Belmont Circular Road, Belmont, in the George F. Huggins building, which was a wooden, family dwelling, adapted for school purposes.
The new school structure was completed in 1972. During the period of Draft Education Plan (1968 – 1983), Providence was allowed to become a Five Year Secondary School.
